Chaplin is a 1992 British biographical film about the life of English comedian Charles Chaplin. It stars Robert Downey Jr., Dan Aykroyd, Geraldine Chaplin, Kevin Kline, and Anthony Hopkins. The film was adapted by Diana Hawkins, William Boyd, Bryan Forbes and William Goldman from the books My Autobiography by Charles Chaplin and Chaplin: His Life and Art by David Robinson. It was produced and directed by Richard Attenborough. The original music score was composed by John Barry. It was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Robert Downey Jr.), Best Art Direction-Set Decoration and Best Music, Original Score. Robert Downey Jr. also won the BAFTA Award for Best Actor. Although the film was criticized for taking dramatic licence with some respects of Chaplin's life, Downey's performance as Chaplin won almost universal acclaim. Attenborough was sufficiently confident in Downey's performance to include historical footage of Chaplin himself at the end of the film. The film's tagline was "Everyone has a wild side. Even a legend." The life and times of filmmaker extraordinaire Charlie Chaplin (Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin). With the use of flashback, an elderly Chaplin discusses his autobiography with his editor (Hopkins), who urges him to be more vulnerable and emotionally honest with his memoirs while journeying through his poverty-stricken childhood, closest friendships, many marriages, merciless pursuit by J. Edgar Hoover (Kevin Dunn), and ingenious invention of "The Little Tramp." Highlighted works such as The Gold Rush (1925) and The Great Dictator (1940) illustrate significant turning points in Chaplin's prolific filmography. Director Richard Attenborough's film also explores the circumstances surrounding Chaplin's exile from America and his eventual return to receive an honorary Academy Award.
